The oilfield at Prudhoe Bay in Alaska has been shutdown following a failure of the trans-Alaska pipeline and a major oil spill. This seems to be a major environmental incident that has received very little news coverage here in South Africa. Apparently the pipeline is in a very poor state of repair and a large section will need to be replaced, causing a two to three month shutdown of the oilfield and having a significant impact on the price of oil.
